Thanks for a very informative blog. Indeed, before undergoing Lasik Eye Surgery we should know everything that we should to know any consequences if we should push through with it. Further research and multiple opinions from specialized doctors on the matter should be considered. I hope the site I found would also be helpful to those concerned people. Thanks. Here's the site Thanks.

University of Maryland researchers suggest that carotenoids, particularly lycopene may protect the eye against oxidative damage and play a critical role in visual function. The identification of lycopene and a diverse range of dietary carotenoids in ocular tissues suggest that these carotenoids, as well as other nutrients found in tomato-based foods, may work in concert with lutein and zeaxanthin to provide protection against age related macular degeneration and other visual disorders.

Lenses should be replaced as discussed with the doctor. Lenses schedules are implemented at the recommendation of the Food and Drug Administration, as they have studied the lens and approved a wearing schedule that makes wearing of the contact lens compatible with maintaining good eye health and hygiene. Wear longer than recommended schedule puts you at risk for certain eye infections, inflammations and even corneal blindness.

I'm in the same boat you are, I feel that they should cover Lasik surgery, not that my eyes are that bad, but it would be nice to get rid of the cheap as frames they give us, that melt in the sun! Usually I have to pay out of pocket for the frames, but I make medicaid pay for the lenses when I get them, this way the Frames last a lot longer and hold up better, but I too would like to get Lasik surgery because I can not wear contact due to Latex Allergy, I've never been able to find out if Latex is in them, and my parents have basically said no, because they are too afraid that if there was that I would lose the sight I have. The Goverment never does anything that saves people money, they always work the hard way, example glasses frames that have to be replaced over and over again, if they would just allow us to get better quality items, things would hold up a lot better, and by get Lasik surgery the goverment really would be saving lots of money in the long run, if you think about it, One surgery, or years and years of lenses, and cheap frames that they constantly have to pay for, even thou they aren't paying a lot for them, I still think that would be included, including Barratic surgery for those who need it. What I couldn't believe is you can go to the Foot Doctor, I mean there are a lot of us with Foot Problems and need doctors too for that. The Glasses the Goverment pay for Texjeff, are Cheap, they aren't like the glasses you get when you go there and purchase them, or have your insurance pay for them, they break, easy and have to be replaced over and over and over again, its not everyones fault that we are on Medicaid or Medicare, some of us are just disabled, and need insurance to keep are health up, but that shouldn't mean we get cheap stuff. Lasik Surgery is only about 3,000 Frames cost about $19-$100 dollars, via medicaid, (I know $19 dollars because thats how much my doctor gets just for my visit) Second, Lense actually cost about $70 dollars, total, and out of this the eye place really doesn't get the full amount. Most people aren't trying to "cheat the goverment taxpayers" its just how are life is, if I don't have insurance I wouldn't ever be able to go to the hospital when I need too, because I currently spend so much of my time in the hospital that I'm just not able to find and keep work, its certainly NOT because I don't want to work, but most employers won't stand for people who are constantly out, you'd get fired, and for the amount of time I spend in the hospital for infections and surgeries and problems, working becomes a real problem. What I have to say is, what I find is people who even have Medicare, who get things like Hearing Aides don't even bother to wear them, but anything I've gotten from medicaid I've used, why give Hearing Aides to people who aren't going to bother wearing them? (my stepfather is one, he got a very expensive hearing aide from Medicare, and refuses to wear it, whether out or home! I certainly think thats a BIG waste of money!Well anyway thats all I have to say!

I think it should be covered. With Lasik you will not any additional pair of glasses for Medicaid to pay for, so, in a way they are saving money actually.
I really hate those people that scream out loud that they pay for Medicaid with their tax money. Well, go scream about how your money is being spent on corrupt politicians and weapons that we do not need. That would serve a much better purpose.
Those people who are on Medicaid are not on Medicaid forever. Those who stay on Medicaid fr years should be investigated, which is the job of bureaucratic fat cats in Washington. Would you rather have a sickly and crippled nation? I think not.

Nice summary of the issues surrounding LASIK.

I would add to your suggestion that price should not be the main factor in choosing a LASIK center. In general, it is a good idea to avoid the "LASIK in a box" centers. As with most things in life you will generally get what you pay for: the more experienced surgeons with the more advanced technology will charge more for LASIK.

These are your eyes, don't cheap out on your vision. It's one thing if you buy a cheap LCD TV and the pixels go bad - you can take it back and exchange it for a new one. But if you have a bad outcome with eye surgery you're stuck with that for life.

Probably the most important decision someone who is considering LASIK must make is what surgeon to choose. Although I do not perform LASIK, I have created a document for my cataract patients to help them in choosing a surgeon. The article can be viewed by clicking this link:

http://sgveye.com/en/resources/35-about-your-eyes/233-10-things-you-must-know-before-choosing-your-cataract-surgeon

The advice in this document can be applied to choosing any surgeon in any specialty, not just cataract surgeons.

This article is very short and lacking in enough details to know with certainty what surgery was performed. However, it appears that Greg had a clear lens exchange (or refractive lens exchange) or a phacic intraocular lens (PIOL) with and advanced IOL.

Probably the most important decision someone who is considering any type of refractive surgery must make is what surgeon to choose. Although I do not perform refractvie surgery, I have created a document for my cataract patients to help them in choosing a surgeon.
Because no insurance company is going to cover an elective procedure involving cutting into healthy tissue, for no reason save for cosmetics and saving time, at the risk of them having to spend another 10 years covering the treatments for when things go wrong.

There is always a chance that you may need a touch up down the road, everyones eyes can change due to different things such as age, hormones, etc. 18 is minimum 21 is better as far as age goes. Some doctors may even do younger than 18. Research different lasik centers in your area and remember not to necessarily go with the cheapest place. Go with technology and doctor reputation.
