Having a defect of your eyesight is both an inconvenience and in many cases completely unnecessary. If you are used to wearing glasses or using contact lenses, then you may not really notice just how much time you devote to this process or the amount of money it actually costs.

Many people turn to eye surgery these days to correct their vision and to dispense with the inconvenience of these daily chores; trips to the opticians; spare sets of glasses; prescription sunglasses; remembering to take your glasses with you; contact lens cleaning; taking them out and putting them in; storage and solutions; The time and money all adds up quite quickly.

Of course eye surgery should not be taken lightly in any sense of the word. With any type of surgery, you are putting a lot of faith and trust into the abilities of the surgeon who performs this procedure for you. Your eyes are very precious and you would not want to entrust just anyone with unproven ability with such an important task.

Start your search by first of all asking as many friends as possible if they have had or know of someone else who has had a laser surgery procedure carried out. They can guide you towards a good and reputable surgeon or guide you away from someone whose service was not as good as it could be.

If there is no one either you or your friends know of who has had any eye surgery at all, the next direction to go is to book appointments to visit at least three different eye surgery centers and to ask the surgeon as many questions as you can think of.

If you are not sure what to ask, be sure to listen intently to the surgeon as he explains his procedure to you and interrupt with any questions when you do not understand or want more detail. This will be expected and your surgeon should gracefully answer anything you ask. If he or she is patient, understanding of your fears and provides lots of information and patient references you will obviously feel far happier with your choice.

Do read up on the subject and consult the clinic or eye center if there are any unresolved issues in your mind before you actually go in for the procedure. Do not be in awe of the surgeon and his staff and afraid to ask things – always remember it is your money and you are using their services, it is ultimately your choice to go ahead or not at any stage.

Speaking of money, it is now possible to get an eye correction for just a few hundred dollars at a very good reputable center. If funding the operation yourself is not possible at present, you may wish to use finance which is usually offered at the surgery. It will soon pay for itself as you will no longer have to buy any more glasses or contact lenses hopefully for many years.

In order to be assured of the best possible outcome for your laser eye correction, visit this site to find out more details on choosing surgeons and the different Laser procedures involved.

Residents of Houston with blurry vision will need to look for a well equipped Houston LASIK eye surgery center to get their eye problems corrected. One such problem is astigmatism that typically causes a person’s vision to become blurred. This is due to a disorder where the cornea is abnormally curved. In order to remove the blurriness, the first step is to visit an ophthalmologist and get an exam to determine if the problem can be treated by Lasik surgery.

Fortunately, Lasik can fix astigmatism, even when the condition is especially bad. Lasik surgery can either completely remove astigmatism or reduce its symptoms to a level where the condition no longer bothers you. Part of what makes this possible is the laser technology in LASIK that is used to make the flap instead of a traditional medical knife.

If you wish to find the best Houston LASIK eye surgeon, then you must not compromise and look only for those doctors who specialize in this form of surgery. The LASIK procedure is known to be painless and quick but you need a specialized surgeon to make sure you are taken care of. Ask many questions when you are interviewing the doctor. You should feel completely at ease with the doctor that will be performing surgery on your eyes.

Fortunately, when looking for Houston LASIK doctors you will find many options available, no matter where you live in Houston. The importance of picking the right Lasik doctor cannot be overstated; so, before you start searching for a suitable doctor, you need to be well educated about laser eye surgery.

You can choose the best Lasik Houston doctor but before doing so, you should find out whether you are eligible for the LASIK procedure. Only a Lasik doctor can tell you if you are and they will do this after analyzing and diagnosing your condition thoroughly. Once they have given your eyes a complete checkup and found that you can be operated upon, you can then proceed looking for the best Lasik Houston center.

Some of the questions to ask the laser eye surgeon are how long have they been performing refractive surgery and how many LASIK surgeries have they performed in the past 12 months. Their answers to these questions will help you better understand their expertise as LASIK eye surgeons. It is suggested to get your procedure done by a Houston laser eye surgeon that has been performing refractive surgeries for over 3 years and has performed over 250 in the last 12 months.

The best Houston LASIK doctors will thoroughly review the entire process of the procedure so that you will know what to expect when you arrive for the procedure and in the days and weeks following the procedure. They will also advice you of any risks or complications that are associated with laser eye surgery.

A major thing to remember when choosing your LASIK surgeon is to pick them based on experience and credentials, not on price. If you think that it is too costly for you, think about how great it will be to see without needing to put your contacts in or glasses on.

Michael B. Caplan, M.D. is acknowledged locally and nationally as a leading ophthalmic surgeon and Houston LASIK expert. If you are trying to find the best LASIK in Houston, visit the Berkeley Eye Center website at www.BerkeleyEye.com.

To determine whether you are suitable for laser eye surgery you will need to book in for a laser eye surgery consultation. During this process your surgeon will assess the health of your eyes and take many measurements to determine that you are a good candidate for surgery. The priority is ensuring that it is safe for you have to treatment.

The vast majority of people who go for a laser consultation will be deemed suitable for the surgery. It is thought that about 80% of patients will be suitable for the procedure. There are lots of reasons that people may not be suitable for the treatment and below are the most common reasons that are given:

High pressure in your eyes: This is one of most common reasons people are not suitable for surgery as it could be dangerous to have the procedure if you already have high pressures. The reason for this is that during the surgery the pressure will be temporarily increased in your eye. If you already have high eye pressure then this could be a problem.

Dry eyes: Dry eyes can be a very annoying condition to have and it is especially noticeable in air conditioned environments. It is important to check how dry your eyes are before laser eye surgery as they are likely to be even dryer following the operation. If your eyes are already dry then you are unlikely to be suitable for the procedure.

Lazy eye: If you have a lazy eye then you are almost certainly unsuitable for laser eye surgery. If you decide you want your non lazy eye lasering then there still may be a problem. The reason for this is that if you have your good eye lasered and something goes wrong then you will be left with only your bad eye. If the sight in this eye is very poor then you may be unable to drive, work etc.

LASIK – or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis – is a surgery of the clear covering of the front of the eye, called the cornea. The procedure changes the cornea’s shape toward more optimal eyesight. It is a common procedure conducted to help those who wear contacts or glasses for vision correction toward the objective of not having to wear those corrective devices anymore.

Just as a camera focuses light to create an image imprinted on film, the human eye’s cornea focuses light to create an image on the retina. This process is called refraction. When the images are out of focus, the eye’s imperfections which cause the blurriness are called refractive errors. For hundreds of years, these vision imperfections have been corrected through wear of glasses or contact lenses. Now, refractive surgeries such as LASIK are available to permanently correct the cornea’s ability to focus and deliver more precise images to the patient’s brain.

The first step for any patient considering LASIK surgery is a consultation with an eye doctor, where the physician will create a surgical plan based upon the patient’s eye health history and measurements of their cornea’s curvature. Because the cornea adjusts to contact lenses and may not resume its normal shape until long after contacts are worn, anyone considering LASIK should only wear glasses for several weeks before the surgery is performed. Otherwise, inaccurate measurements of their cornea may be taken and results of the procedure will not prove optimal.

Communication between the doctor and patient is key to the best outcome for LASIK eye surgery. During the initial consultation, the physician will ask about the patient’s health history, eye health, any prescriptions presently being taken, over-the-counter medications frequently or currently used, and allergies. Through an eye exam the doctor can determine if the patient is truly a good candidate for LASIK and then will provide the patient with an explanation of the potential outcomes of the surgical procedure. The LASIK eye surgery candidate will also be made aware of their responsibilities for before, during and after surgery.

Leading up to the LASIK procedure, the patient should not use creams, makeup, lotions, or perfumes for at least 24 hours. Beauty products such as mascara and eyeliner, as well as other products, can remain around the eye even after washing. So, the doctor may request that the patient scrubs their eyes and eyelashes clean for several days before coming in for surgery. This attention to cleanliness will aid in ensuring risk for operative and post-operative eye infection is minimized.

Before going to the eye doctor for LASIK eye surgery, the patient needs to plan ahead to have a friend or transportation provider pick them up when the procedure is completed and for getting them to and from the first post-surgical checkup. The patient’s vision will be blurry and following the operation they will likely be medicated with a prescription which will impair driving ability.

Typical discomfort following LASIK eye surgery includes mild pain for which a pain reliever may be prescribed, itching, burning, and hazy and blurred vision. The patient’s vision will improve drastically over the next few days and will stabilize at between three and six months post-surgery. Most patients are so pleased with their results that the minor and briefly encountered irritations are considered well worth the improvement and reduction of hassle and expense that wearing glasses and contact lenses brings to daily life.

Beyond the return to normal activities in the days following surgery, LASIK patients will likely be asked to refrain from strenuous sports and pursuits such as soccer, karate, and tennis. Makeup, creams, and lotions should not be used around the eyes for a few weeks post-operation. Hot tubs and swimming pools will also likely be prohibited for a couple of months. Although most people respond similarly to LASIK eye surgery, their doctor will know the best course of treatment and recovery for the individual patient.

LASIK is a procedure that was invented in the late 1990s to ease the suffering of contact wearers. It replaced the much riskier procedure of radial keratotomy. Still, there are still side effects to this new procedure, and all surgeries pose risks. Anyone contemplating this procedure should be aware of its potential hazards.

The word LASIK is a shortening of “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.” WIth a high-intensity laser, the cornea of the eye is reshaped. In near-sighted people, it is flattened; in farsighted people, steepened. This helps light to focus better on the retina. Usually lasting only five minutes, the procedure is short. Both eyes can be corrected at the same time, or a patient can spread out the procedure over time.

Immediately after surgery, all patients see blurry. Someone else must drive you home. Other immediate symptoms include light sensitivity and eye irritation. Even tearing of the eye is possible. However, many of these symptoms are normal.

Rest in the first few weeks is important for the eye to heal. Post-surgery behavior is just as important as the surgery itself. Touching the eye, wearing makeup, and swimming are absolutely forbidden. Strenuous exercise is usually not allowed for at least a week. Most doctors suggest taking time off from work, however, it is possible for a patient to go back to work immediately. Without proper healing, the corneal changes made during surgery may come undone.

There is no guarantee that a patient will achieve 20/20 vision, and many have to continue to wear corrective lenses. Some people even experience a gradual decline in vision after it has been improved, and surgery is required to fix this problem. This symptom, known as regression, is rare.

Infection is the most dangerous and rare consequence. While the surgery is performed using sterile procedures and a patient continues to take antibiotics at home, infection is possible and painful. It can lead to a scarred cornea, and ultimately, eye loss. An entire corneal transplant may have to be performed to save the eye. This can be a painful process, as well as expensive.

A more common long-term side-effect of the surgery may be night glare. This symptom occurs when one looks into lights and sees spots or halos. It can have a debilitative effect on night driving. The FDA even warns that LASIK patients may be lose their ability to drive at night completely.

The normal, age-related loss of near vision most people experience once they hit 40, also known as presbyopia, still occurs even with the surgery. A medical cure for presbyopia is not currently available, although research is underway.

Many people believe there have not been enough studies on LASIK and its long-term risks. In late 2009, a study was initiated to survey the national population of patients to determine how their quality of life has changed. This study is funded by the FDA, the U. S. Department of Defense, and the National Eye Institute (NEI). By 2012, the study should be complete. Many patients do not wish to wait this long, but should be aware that all the risks of the surgery are not yet known.

Ideally you will have discovered enough to help you to make your decision about Laser eye surgery. Check this resource for Anaheim lasik. Check out this link for facts and information about LASIK in Aurora .

To determine whether you are suitable for laser eye surgery you will need to book in for a laser eye surgery consultation. During this process your surgeon will assess the health of your eyes and take many measurements to determine that you are a good candidate for surgery. The priority is ensuring that it is safe for you have to treatment.

If one hundred people go for a laser eye surgery consultation, 80 will be told that they are suitable for treatment and about 20 will not. It is worth knowing some of the main reasons that may mean you are not suitable for surgery, so you can decide whether it is worth going for the consultation. The following are some of the most common reasons:

High pressure in your eye: High pressure in your eye which is often associated with Glaucoma is a contraindication for surgery. The reason for this is that during the procedure the pressure in your eye will be temporarily increased. This will do no harm at all to people will normal eye pressure, but if your pressures are already high it puts you at a slightly higher risk.

Dry eyes: If you have dry eyes then your surgeon may insist that you are not suitable for surgery. The reason for this is that most people following laser eye surgery experience dryer eyes than they had before the treatment. If your eyes are already dry then this may be a problem. It may mean you have to put dry eye drops in for life which is not ideal.

Lazy eye: Lazy eye is one of the most common reasons people decide to have laser eye surgery but unfortunately the vast majority of people will not be suitable. The reason for this is that laser eye surgery will only give you the same vision as you currently can see with your lazy eye in your glasses. So if you can currently see the top line of the chart with your glasses on, then following surgery you will still only be able to see the same.

If you are one of the millions of people who have decided to have laser eye surgery then before you go ahead and have the actual treatment, you will be presented with a few options about the procedure. The first decision you will have to make is whether to undergo Lasek or Lasik laser vision correction.

As well as choosing between Lasik and Lasek you will also need to decide if you want wavefront technology. It is generally considered an optional extra although in certain situations your surgeon may insist that you have it. Wavefront is considered a premium option as it results in a more accurate laser vision correction.

Examples of when your surgeon will insist that you have Wavefront are if your pupils are over a certain size and if you have high astigmatism. Both these factors mean you are at a higher risk of having night vision problems following surgery. Wavefront dramatically reduces the problems associated with night vision after the treatment.

If you do not have large pupils and astigmatism then whether you have this laser add-on is entirely your decision. The main advantage it has over standard laser vision correction is that it is more accurate and increases the chances of your having perfect vision following your treatment. Most people are almost guaranteed to have at least driving standard of vision.

The way it does this is by taking many different measurements right across your cornea rather than at just one point during the standard procedure. The wave scan typically measures at least 25 points across the eye, meaning it is 25 times more accurate than standard treatment. This significantly increases your chances of achieving perfect vision. Wavefront also has the added advantage of reduced night vision problems. Most people following wavfront laser eye surgery report improved night vision.

Glasses and contacts can be a burden in everyday life. Lasik surgery is a way to reduce dependency on glasses or contacts. It stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It permanently changes the curve of the cornea.

This surgery is not appropriate for all people. There are risks involved in any surgical procedure. It is also something to keep in mind that most medical insurance policies do not cover the procedure. Although the price has been coming down, it is still not a cheap operation.

Vision needs to be stable for at least a year before the procedure is done. If your prescription keeps changing, it means that the eye is still curving. Surgery done at this time will not be effective.

Before deciding on any medical procedure many factors need to be taken into account. Comparison is a must. Different surgeons, centers, and equipment will give different results. The number of procedures the doctor has done will also make a difference.

Don’t make this decision solely based on price. Over the long run differences in cost will probably not make a big difference. Keep in mind that this is a procedure that lasts for a lifetime. Don’t settle for the first eye center or doctor you investigate.

Do your homework and know what you are getting yourself into. Educate yourself by reading all materials your doctor gives you and asking questions. Any doctor you choose should be willing to talk about all the outcomes of their surgeries, including complications.

Before and after the procedure there are things that you are responsible for. Getting a baseline eye exam is the first step. This exam is essential for measuring the baseline curve of the eye and determining if you are a suitable candidate for surgery.

If you are a contact lens wearer it is important to remove them before the initial exam. Contact lenses can change the shape of the eye. If the shape of the eye is not accurately measured there can be negative consequences. Since the surgery reshapes the eye, a true eye measurement needs to be taken before a surgical plan can be made.

Hard contacts need to be removed 4 weeks before baseline measurement. Rigid gas permeable lenses need to be taken out 3 weeks before and soft contacts have to come out 2 weeks before measurement. Depending on the timing, more than one baseline measurement may be made.

The day before surgery stop using all lotions, creams, makeup and perfumes. These products can increase the likelihood of infection. Debris along eyelashes can also cause problems, so your doctor may have you scrub along the eyelashes before the operation.

On the day of the operation be sure you have arranged for transportation to and from the procedure. The surgery itself should only take about thirty minutes. You will be lying on your back. A numbing drop is placed in the eye and the eye is held open. You will be asked to stare at a light to hold the eye in place. Once the eye is in position, the laser cuts off part of the eye to correct the vision. After the procedure a shield will be placed over the eye since stitches are not used.

After surgery there should be regular visits with your doctor within the first 6 months. It may take up to six months for vision to stabilize after the surgery. Contact sports and strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 weeks after surgery. Hot tubs and swimming should be avoided for 8 weeks after the procedure.

Most people who have the procedure are satisfied with it, 92-98% of patients. Occasionally glasses or retreatment are needed later in life, but people are still happy. Lasik is not for all, but those who are good candidates are usually happy.

If you are having laser eye surgery then you need to make sure you choose the very best surgeon possible. You may choose a clinic with the very best equipment and support staff but non of these things are of any use if your doctor is not competent. Before deciding on your laser eye surgeon, you should ask him/her the following list of questions:

How many laser eye surgery procedures have you carried out: It’s like with all things in life, competence generally coincides with experience. A laser eye surgeon who has carried out more laser eye surgery procedures is likely to perform to a higher level than a surgeon who has just started out.

What are your laser re-enhancement rates? A laser re-enhancement simply means a patients laser eye surgery has had to be repeated at some point after the initial procedure. The average laser re-enhancement rate is about 5-10% so anything below this is good!

How often do complications occur during your laser vision correction? Choose a surgeon who has the lowest complication rates. Make sure the complication rates are below 1% otherwise they will be above what they are expected to be. Be wary of a surgeon who is reluctant to disclose this information as it may mean they are hiding something.

What are your laser vision correction results? The better than surgeon the higher your chances of achieving 20/20 vision. A good laser eye surgery will achieve 20/20 vision for about 90% of his/her patients. If you can find a surgeon who has better results than this, then you should consider yourself very lucky.

As well as going through the list of questions with your surgeon you should also decide if you trust him/her as a person. You need to feel you can fully trust your surgeon as you are putting your vision in his/her hands. It is no good having a surgeon who has amazing qualifications but you do not feel fully confident in his/her ability.

If money is not an issue when you are choosing your laser vision correction then you are most likely going to ask what the very best laser surgery there is available. There are optional extras that can be added on to your treatment that mean you are more liley to get 20:20 vision. Having these additional treatments also means your surgery is more likely to be free from complications.

Intralase Lasik with Wavefront is universally accepted as the premium eye laser surgery currently available. If you decide to have this treatment then you will be having the most accurate and safest laser surgery. The reason Intralase Lasik with Wavefront is classed as the best laser eye surgery available is because of the following:

Lasik: Lasik is the most popular laser vision correction and is about 8 times more common than Lasek eye surgery. The reason for its popularity is because the recovery period for Lasik surgery is far quicker than that of Lasek. This means that people who have Lasik can return to work and drive sooner following surgery.

Wavefront: Wavefront can be used with both Lasik and Lasek and makes the procedure a lot more accurate. Wavefront is especially effective on high prescriptions and is recommended on those people who have large pupils. This is because people with large pupils are more likely to have night vision problems and wavefront is especially good at improving night vision.

Intralase: Intralase describes the way in which the flap is created during the Lasik procedure. During the standard Lasik procedure the flap is created using a microkeratome. During Intralase, the flap is created using a laser instead of a blade. This results in a safer and more accurate laser eye surgery procedure.
